That sense of loss makes No Way Out a more substantial album than most mid-'90s hip-hop releases, and even if it has flaws - there's a bit too much filler and it runs a little long - it is nevertheless a compelling, harrowing album that establishes Puff Daddy as a vital rapper in his own.

No Way Out is the debut studio album by American rapper Puff Daddy. It was released on July 22, 1997, by Bad Boy Records and Arista Records.

No Way Out is a living document of the most tumultuous period in Bad Boy’s run. It embodies the complex mix of emotions felt while persevering through great trauma amid triumph. It's a record that splits itself in two trying to capture a gaudy lifestyle and the devastation of loss all at once, equal parts funeral pyre, signal fire, and beach luau. One minute they’re jet-setting around the globe with Big in tow, the next Puff is alone peeking over his shoulder for armed assailants, contemplating his final hour

Album · 1997 · 23 Songs. That was Thom Yorke’s message to a Norwegian crowd in June 2017 before Radiohead played I Promise live for the first time since 1996. The centerpiece of OKNOTOK’s second set of unreleased tracks and B-sides, it’s a startlingly beautiful snapshot of the band’s ridiculous post-The Bends, OK Computer-era potency. Elsewhere, Lift is another glistening gem from the vaults and Meeting in the Aisle provides a reminder of the band’s haunting way around an instrumental. A remastered OK Computer, meanwhile, remains the foreboding masterpiece it ever was. OK Computer OKNOTOK Radiohead.

Radiohead sweat out a rambunctious fever on only a few songs like Bodysnatchers (many more, like Bangers & Mash, were dumped on the bonus disc) in favor of slowing things down for the rest of the record without falling prey to the tropes usually associated with balladry. The airiness of the album is what gives the minute changes such empathetic motion. For a minute there, I lost myself : Radiohead like to switch up time signatures the way Shakespeare liked to occasionally veer from iambic pentameter. With this album, Radiohead did to music what Pollock and Rothko did to paints, stripping away everything extraneous - all the context and characters and places and stories that had always seemed necessary for popular music and gave us something no less compelling for being abstract and all the more powerful for being pure.
