Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc) is an operatic dramma lirico with a prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera, who had prepared the libretti for Nabucco and I Lombardi. It is Verdi's seventh opera. The work partly reflects the story of Joan of Arc and appears to be loosely based on the play Die Jungfrau von Orleans by Friedrich von Schiller.

For his seventh opera, Giuseppe Verdi built on the success of Nabucco and I Lombardi. The libretto of Giovanna d’Arco concentrates on the ‘here and now’ and on the main protagonist’s struggles. As a result, the historical events make way for impressive choral tableaux and a heroic musical characterisation of Giovanna. This autumn the La Monnaie audience will be given an insight into the fascinating figure of Joan of Arc: through the prism of the 19th century in this concert performance of Verdi’s opera, and later in the stage production of Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher.

About the opera Giovanna d'Arco. Giovanna d'Arco (Joan of Arc) is an operatic dramma lirico with a prologue and three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Temistocle Solera. The opera partly reflects the story of Joan of Arc and appears to be loosely based on the play Die Jungfrau von Orleans by Friedrich von Schiller. However, Solera denied this assertion in letters to Verdi's publisher, and claimed that the work was "an entirely original Italian drama.
