From the earnest 14-year-old kid singing ska in the mid-'60s to the heavy roots vibe of his early-'70s recordings, OK Fred is the first collection to give a picture of just how much ground Errol Dunkley covered in the first two decades of his career. His ska recordings date back to 1963 with "My Queen" and 1966's "Love Me Forever," both of which are charming in a precocious way, but only hint at the booming vibrato-laden voice that Dunkley would later grow into. Roots for Dunkley was all about slow churning riddims and not so much the politics that accompanied them.
Jah Thomas was an important figure on the Jamaican music scene during both the roots era of the '70s and the subsequent dancehall decade of the '80s. Besides releasing several DJ sides of his own in the latter half of the '70s, Thomas also came into his own as one of the island's top producers for . .Following the longstanding trend in the Jamaican music industry, Thomas proceeded to hook up with a variety of local labels to put out some additional albums, including Dance Hall Style on Daddy Kool and Dance on the Corner for Abraham. Along with bassist Errol "Flabba" Holt, who supervised Thomas' Midnight Rock session, the Radics also featured drummer "Style" Scott, guitarist Eric "Bingy Bunny" Lamont, pianist Gladstone Anderson, trumpeter Bobby Ellis, and percussionist Bongo Herman, among several other shifting personnel.
