Dum spiro spero means "While I breathe, I hope" in Latin and is a modern paraphrase of ideas that survive in two ancient writers, Theocritus and Cicero. It is a motto of various places, families, and organizations. The notable origin of the motto is St Andrews, Fife, Scotland.

He also singled out bassist Toshiya as deserving of praise for his performance on Dum Spiro Spero, "as his throbbing bass lines complement the technical guitar riffs well by adding a groovy kind of bad-ass attitude to the overall feel of the music. Without him, the guitar melodies of Kaoru and Die would most certainly sound naked and hollow.

About the title: Dum spiro spero, dum spiro scio" is Latin and means basically "As long as I hope, I can live; as long as I hope, I can learn" (or something like that - my English is not really good, I hope the translation is right xD). Dum Spiro Spero, the eighth full-length studio offering by Japan's Dir en Grey builds considerably on the musical frontiers established 2008's Uroboros. At this point in their career, it's simply inaccurate to call Dir en Grey a metal band, though they use plenty of it to get their unique, ambitious meld of styles across. While the pre-release singles "Different Sense" and "Lotus" offer somewhat accurate portraits of the sounds employed on Dum Spiro Spero, they're really only an aural sample of what's on offer. The acoustic guitars that introduce the power ballad "Vanitas" belie its sophisticated melody and lush use of dynamics, and underscore the album's brilliant production (handled by the band with a handful of engineers). That balladry is hinted at in the closer "Ruten No Tou," but is subverted - and expanded upon - by power metal and multi-textured pop. Dir en Grey are a band in their own genre at this point, and Dum Spiro Spero is the farthest-reaching testament to establish that as fact more than opinion.

Elsa Hewitt presents DUM SPIRO SPERO, Part II in the album trilogy of 2017. Breathing SpaceX’ and ‘Tantrum’ are two tantalizing precursors to set the scene. After the fractured and dreamlike Cameras From Mars earlier this year, DUM SPIRO SPERO clearly asserts the second phase, with a more earthy and confident overtone. This record is layered with the careful intricacy of a French patisserie, decorated by verses of empathetic and honest prose

This album once again finds Kyo going back to his heavier vocal roots with long screams, and high pitch squeals. This sound seems to be something which he has been lacking in previous album "The Marrow of A Bone" and except for a few songs "Withering To Death". As a fan of albums such as "Gauze", "Macabre" and "Vulgar" myself I was very pleased with this album.
