Talking with Siouxsie & The Banshees in a Park in Soho, London, June 1978. Total length both sides approximately 30 minutes.

The Scream is the debut studio album by British alternative rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees. Recorded in one week and mixed in three during August 1978, it was released on 13 November 1978 by record label Polydor. Before the album's release, the band had developed a strong reputation as a live act, and had achieved a Top 10 UK single with "Hong Kong Garden" (which did not appear on the original album).

Siouxsie and the Banshees were an English rock band, formed in London in 1976 by vocalist Siouxsie Sioux and bass guitarist Steven Severin. They have been widely influential, both over their contemporaries and with later acts. Mojo rated guitarist John McGeoch in their list of "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" for his work on "Spellbound". The Times cited the group as "one of the most audacious and uncompromising musical adventurers of the post-punk era".

Siouxsie is, according to the NME Poll, the 14th most popular female singer in the world. They hold the house record at the Vortex. They sold out the Nashville two nights running. Is there sympathy with the Banshees? A common recognition of the need for individual regeneration, the realisation that men must suffer to know joy, some genuine concern as to when a nihilism becomes a barbarism? Is there ion of the way that Siouxsie and the Banshees have conclusively shown the amount of possible utilising unorthodox and minimal techniques? Or is it just hip to like them, for numerous reasons?

Siouxsie Sioux first came to our attention in 1976 as a Sex Pistols acolyte who was standing behind the band during the notorious interview with Bill Grundy on The Today Programme. Yet with hindsight, her work doesn’t seem to belong to punk at all. Her debut album didn’t appear until 1978, by which time untutored three-chord thrashing was beginning to appear passé. Instead, with the Banshees she helped to invent a form of post-punk discord full of daring rhythmic and sonic experimentation that was as influential as it was underrated

In 1981 Siouxsie and the Banshees gave a great concert at the Paradiso. It was filmed for the Amsterdam Pirate TV Station PKP with a portable VHS. They went to the Paradiso in the afternoon during the soundcheck, and it was the guitar player John McGeoch who talked to them and gave permission to film the concert that evening. They filmed from the balcony, and even though it is of course VHS quality from the eighties, it is still quite enjoyable to watch. The spotlight on Siouxsie shines a little too bright at times but her dancing is great. Plus the concert ends in my favourite song : Helter.

The history of one of post punk’s most enigmatic figures, Siouxsie Sioux, is mirrored faithfully in miniature by the sonic artefacts she left at the BBC in the form of carefully archived radio sessions, live footage and appearances on programmes such as The Old Grey Whistle Test and Top Of The Pops; a career which is still blossoming - she released her first. In fact even before the release of their first album (The Scream in 1978) they had proved that they were like the musical equivalent of Dario Argento’s Suspiria - a room full of barbed wire, a death by a thousand cuts, a childhood gone wrong, technicolour psychedelia, witchcraft and poisoned wine.
