Bob Brookmeyer - Composer, Performer. Born on December 19th 1929, Robert Brookmeyer2 started his musical life growing up in Kansas City, a place where, according to The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, a style of orchestral jazz developed in the 1920s and 1930s (Robinson, 1988, p. 642). At the age of eight he began to study the clarinet and then trombone at thirteen, against his wishes, preferring to play either drums or the trumpet. While this is important for the jazz composer - to know how to structure vertical harmony and chords - Brookmeyer explains that it is the context and the colour, which is more important: A chord is part of a harmonic progression. Something goes to something, which goes to something.

Valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer became the big band's chief arranger for a time, and his charts show the influence of modern classical music while usually still swinging. This hard to find album features the orchestra playing live at their home base (the Village Vanguard), and such soloists as pianist Jim McNeely and Dick Oatts on alto and soprano; flugelhornist Clark Terry, and Brookmeyer himself are featured on the nearly 16-minute "El Co" and "The Fan Club. Worthwhile if not essential music.

There's a richness, a depth, a density to his varied charts. And what different sound comes from this grand aggregate of 16, plus three on selected tracks. And yet, oddly enough, the spirit of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra is only furthered by the late Brookmeyer's alternate, complementary visions, visions that also take advantage of this band's uncanny knack for quick moves, extended blowing and eloquence where time stands still, the blues implied more often than stated outright.
