Well, Through the Years is a bit like Tony Bennett for beginners. Here we hear Mr. Bennett singing songs that pretty much everyone knows, even if they're songs that Bennett wasn't necessarily famous for singing. This tendency is particularly noticeable in the inclusion of songs like "The Way You Look Tonight", from the 1997 soundtrack to My Best Friend's Wedding, and "Blue Moon", from 1973's The Rodgers and Hart Songbook. Understandably, these types of pieces are relegated to the end of the album, while Bennett standards like "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" and "The Best is Yet to Come" are toward the front. It mercifully eases us into Bennett's music with his hits before attempting to endear us to some lesser-known (though still recognizable) tunes from Bennett's sizable repertoire. So, as Bennett compilations go, the tracklist is really not too bad.

The album was the first project of Bennett's own Improv label. The album was Bennett's tribute to the American songbook featuring songs of Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin and others. The pianist, Torrie Zito, wrote new arrangements for Bennett's large session orchestra

Mel Torme dismissed Tony Bennett's skills as a jazz singer, and in mining the Great American Songbook, Bennett certainly has drawn more from bel canto style than scat. But as this remarkable 1975 duo album with the great jazz pianist Bill Evans demonstrates, Bennett was (and is) supremely comfortable with jazz and jazz players. The artists re-teamed a year later to fine, if less startling, effect on "Together Again. This date, and the follow-up 2 years later, are definitely worth purchasing. This is timeless music that will always remain fresh, no matter how many times it is heard.

Bennett, who celebrates his 92nd birthday today, 3 August, has been friends with Krall for over 20 years. The two toured together in 2000 and recorded duets for two of Bennett’s albums (‘Duets’ and ‘Playin’ With My Friends’), but this marks their first full album project together
