I hear the ticking of the clock I’m lying here the room’s pitch dark I wonder where you are tonight No answer on the telephone And the night goes by so very slow Oh, I hope that it won’t end though Alone.

Alone" is a song composed by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly, who recorded it under the name i-Ten on their 1983 album Taking a Cold Look. It was later recorded by Valerie Stevenson and John Stamos, in their roles as Lisa Copley and Gino Minelli, on the original soundtrack of the CBS sitcom Dreams in 1984. American rock band Heart covered it on their 1987 album Bad Animals, and this version reached number one in the US and Canada. In 2007 Celine Dion recorded it for her album Taking Chances.
Lyrics to "Alone" song by Heart: I hear the ticking of the clock I'm lying here the room's pitch dark I wonder where you are tonight. Billy Steinberg recalled how he and Tom Kelly recorded an early version of "Alone" as i-Ten in 1983, "The album was titled 'Taking A Cold Look'. It didn't do much although it has sort of a cult following in Europe. The most prominent song on it was 'Alone'. Tom and I recorded it for that record and just sort of set it aside when that record didn't succeed. Tom Kelly sang the harmony part on the chorus of this track. Alone" became Heart's biggest hit, reaching number one in the USA and Canada.
The band wrote most of their early hits, which were rockers like "Barracuda" and "Magic Man," but starting with their 1985 album Heart, they got a lot of help from some top songwriters. Neal from North, NjCarrie Underwood's performance of Alone is excellent technically, but it invokes nowhere near the same emotion as Heart's recording. I prefer the straight-hitting power rock ballad than the jazzed up pop version. It just seems more appropriate given the lyrics.
Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly originally wrote this song for their own act, I-Ten and the album Taking a Cold Look. In 1984, it was performed by John Stamos and Valerie Stevenson in character for their short-lived TV sitcom Dreams. Heart’s version spent three weeks at on Billboards Hot 100.
