Damenchor des Rundfunkchors Berlin, Berliner Philharmoniker. Dietrich Knothe (director). This disc proves conclusively that the DanteSymphony, a contemporary of the Faust Symphony, no longer needs its apologists. Tone, full and rounded, firm and true, and rocksteady pacing elevate the opening beyond its all-too familiar resemblance to a third-rate horror-film soundtrack.

Liszt’s Dante Symphony is a work of astonishing imagination. His evocation of the ‘Inferno’, the shade of Francesca da Rimini and her sad remembered love is marked by strokes of genius which, with bewildering frequency, pre-empt the mature Wagner (who was, incidentally, the dedicatee of the work). If the second and third movements – the ‘Paradiso’ was wisely commuted to a setting of part of the Magnificat plus a brief Hosanna – don’t quite match the sweep and control of the first, they have their own particular magic. Even so, the work has not acquired the popularity of the Faust Symphony

Dante Symphony, S. 109: Magnificat. Daniel Barenboim and Berliner Philharmoniker. 4. Dante Sonata, S. 161, No. 7 - Fantasia quasi Sonata. 4 Songs, 1 Hour 6 Minutes. Released: Sep 1, 1991. 1991 Teldec Classics International GmbH.

Sinopoli gives us two pieces from Busoni's Dr Faustus, whereas Barenboim plays the piano. His reading of the Dante Sonata is, I think, one of the best; but he recorded the same piece ever better on Deutsche Gramophon on a solo album containing a magnificent performance of the Sonata in B minor. I'm inclined to put Barenboim's recording on the same level as Masur's. Two very different view of the same work, both indispensable.
