This album should have been to them what the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack was to the Bee Gees or what Thriller was to Michael Jackson. Damn shame it wasn't Promoted like it should have been.

My promise Boogie wonderland Let your feelings soon Lady sun Sign on Got to get you into my life Fantasy The changing times Gratitude Freedom of choice Spread your love Moon walk Sweet sassy lady Faces Let me Talk. Horns by the grand master Jerry Hey and his crew. Though it caused some friction in the band, it seems to me Maurice would do it to raise the bar on the guys in the band. Then they had to go out and play those parts live.

Columbia/Legacy's double-disc set The Essential Earth, Wind & Fire lives up to its title by offering 34 tracks of the groundbreaking funk band at its peak. All of the hits, whether they're R&B or tunes that crossed over to the pop charts, are here, along with important album tracks that capture the range and depth of EWF. Since this focuses on their peak of the '70s and early '80s, there's very little here that doesn't qualify as "essential," which makes it a better bet than their box set.
