The New Dance Sound of Detroit, an album compiled by ex-Northern Soul DJ and Kool Kat Records boss Neil Rushton (at the time an A&R scout for Virgin's "10 Records" imprint) and Derrick May, was an important milestone and marked the introduction of the word techno in reference to a specific genre of music. Although the compilation put techno into the lexicon of music journalism, the music was, for a time, sometimes characterized as Detroit's high-tech interpretation of Chicago house rather than a relatively pure genre unto itself . Rebirth of Detroit, J Dilla's second posthumous album, is a grandiose reclamation, as Detroit wraps the venerated MC and production pioneer into an inescapable bear hug. He's made, once again, into the figurehead and totem for the once-great city. The album holds 21 tracks of classically raw Motor City rap, and all the good and bad that comes with that mythic Michigan territory. Unlike his first posthumous collection, 2009's Jay Stay Paid, most of the tracks on Rebirth have rappers on them, a coterie of Detroit MC's who double as Dilla worshippers
Twenty-six tracks of rare female-sung '60s Detroit soul, none of 'em hits, and few of them by famous artists. As is always the case on Marginal releases, no discographical details are provided, and without a complete Motown release list handy, it's impossible to tell whether many or most of these are actually obscure Motown cuts. Whether or not specific tracks originated at Motown, however, the sound of the music is very much Motown, whether the inspiration is quite specific (Linda Griner's "Goodbye Cruel World" sounds a lot like Mary Wells; Debbie Dean's "Stay My Love" sounds quite a bit like the Supremes' "I Hear a Symphony" in spots) or there's simply a prevalent Motown feel.
