Nine Types of Light is as much an album as it is a movie by TV on the Radio

Nine Types of Light is the fourth studio album by American art rock band TV on the Radio, released on April 11, 2011 through Interscope Records. The album's lead single "Will Do" was released on February 23, 2011.

Perhaps it was a residual feeling, an emotional vestige from Tunde Adebimpe’s role as groom Sidney in the film Rachel Getting Married. Or maybe it was a desire to contrast the tumultuous times of 2011 with an amorous album. Following 2008’s Dear Science, where TV on the Radio balanced anger with hope, Nine Types of Light overflows with complex themes of love. Second Song opens with Adebimpe questioning and doubting his feelings until the song blossoms with Bee Gees–inspired falsettos and a groove so sunny that he entertains going with the flow

Nine Types of Light unfolds at an unhurried pace, beginning with a pair of Malone songs that sound like they should close an album rather than begin it. The confessional, ambling Second Song takes its sweet time to build up to a mildly funky groove; as it flares into brass and guitar, it sounds like dusk becoming night on the Sunset Strip. Though they crank things up on Repetition and No Future Shock, TV on the Radio sound more comfortable being comfortable, even when getting in some satirical digs at the . mindset ( Beverly Hills/nuclear winter/what should we wear/and who’s for dinner? ) on Forgotten 's eternal summer haze. The band has always written about love with the same urgency and eloquence with which they tackle politics and other subjects, and Nine Types of Light is no exception.

Nine Types of Light isn’t like TV on the Radio’s other albums, and that is what partially makes it great. All good artists grow and evolve over the course of their career. A music career is something organic; artists are living breathing people who grow, mature, and evolve. Indie music fans are often very critical about what music should or should not sound like. But the same tired complaints of later albums not sounding like the first two albums are beyond cliché and predictable

Nine Types of Light, both the album and the movie are set to release on April 12, 2011. On April 12, 2011, the album Nine Types of Light was released along with a one-hour film under the same name containing music videos for all the songs on the album as well as interviews with various New Yorkers. The film was directed by various directors under the supervision of Tunde Adebimpe. It was announced in March 2011, that the band's bassist, Gerard Smith, was diagnosed with lung cancer.
