Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1, Rachmaninoff: Solo Piano Works. Arcadi Volodos is one of the greatest living pianists, and excells in Rachmaninoff's shorter works. The 3rd Concerto seems to escape him however, in that he gives a fragmented performance rather than bringing all 3 movements together as a single statement. During the opening of the first movement both piano and orchestra are out of sinc with one another for about. The performance is therefore technically perfect in that he plays all the right notes in the most fiendishly difficult passages, but musically wanting. The high point of this CD is the individual solo works. During the solo pieces he is so spontaneous and natural, the music flows as if he were breathing it to life which he most certainly does. Right up there with Richter and Horowitz.
