In the 1970s Boston was a fertile ground for a very creative jazz scene. Small, independent venues ranging from lofts to churches to clubs opened up to support this thriving backdrop while jazz musicians set up their own labels. One man was there through it all, playing music and documenting the musical landscape. Mark Harvey and Deano Sounds pulled together the most comprehensive package of Boston Jazz released to date

This deluxe overview of Boston's creative jazz scene is packaged in an 8 ½ x 5 ½, 80 page book documenting the rich history of the music with in-depth analyses and photos. In the 1970s Boston was a fertile ground for a very creative jazz scene. The music on this album is culled from rare private press Jazz LPs that were pressed in small quantities of a few hundred for members of the band and the local jazz community at the time. The music here runs the gamut of funky jazz from Arnie Cheatham's 'Thing' to the deep free jazz of the Phill Musra Group or the spoken word brilliance of Worlds, to the complex metric structures of Stanton Davis' 'Play Sleep. The music here runs the gamut of funky jazz from Arnie Cheatham’s Thing to the deep free jazz of the Phill Musra Group or the spoken word brilliance of Worlds, to the complex metric structures of Stanton Davis’ Play Sleep. This is a collection of very rare eccentric jazz pieces for your enjoyment!

The Boston Creative Jazz Scene 1970 – 1983’ compiles nine tracks from various groups that were active in Boston, including his own unit, mostly culled from limited vinyl pressings by the groups involved. While the book offers a good insider’s perspective on the development of Boston’s scene, including just nine tracks of audio evidence – especially when Harvey’s group, saxophonist Arni Cheatham’s Thing and The Phill Musra Group each have two tracks on show – on face value does very little to redress the notion that Boston’s avant-garde scene wasn’t that. When seen as a mere primer, ‘The Boston Creative Jazz Scene’ is a decent introduction to a discrete, distinct, and strong proof that avant-garde jazz has a map all to itself. Words: Mat Smith, mith. He was a fine Boston-based jazz guitarist, educator and writer. I used to talk to him when he would come into Looney Tunes Records, where I worked in the mid-'90s. In '93 he released his first album "A Blue Deeper Than Blue", recorded live at Sculler's in Boston, and several more releases followed. He also founded the Variable Density Sound Orchestra, which released albums on his own Creative Nation Music label. He remained a creative composer until his death in Italy. He had an Eastern-inflected sound and could swing or play ballads, free jazz, blues, bossa nova or even play funky at time. He crafted unique arrangements of a wide variety of material. He was better known in Europe but kept himself busy in the States as well.
