Magnetic Magenta Blue In the high pressure game of Promo Sump Bingo, sometimes you win big. Vanishing Kids, an act wholly unknown to me, lists themselves as somnambulic doom, and that sounded interesting enough to snatch from the murky waters and scurry away with to my Ape Cave of Solitude. The thing is, they’re not really doom at all. In fact, they’re one of those rare bands that openly defies easy classification.

Vanishing Kids has been an ever evolving artistic and musical journey since the early 2000’s with core members and founder’s Jason Hartman (Jex Thoth), and Nikki Drohomyreky on vocals. As kids of the 70s and 80s who grew up on metal, prog rock, krautrock, psych, punk and goth, they have managed to carve out a niche of their own for themselves. The somnambulic doom- metal group from Wisconsin present their new album ‘Heavy Dreamer’ on November 30th on LP, CD and digital formats. Vanishing Kids present Heavy Dreamer, their big label debut on Svart Records. With a self described, perfectly fitting label of ‘Metal/Heavy Psych/Acid Rock/Dream Goth’ the band presents a eerie, haunting album of music that transcends labels. Think Hawkwind and Blue Cheer having a child, yet letting Vovoid and My Bloody Valentine get a hold of it during the formative years

Vanishing Kids and their new album Heavy Dreamer skate around easy classification. There are clear influences from doom ( Mockingbird ) and heavy psych (skip to anywhere on the album), but there’s also plenty of shoegaze and occult rock sensibilities thrown in for good measure and maximum weirdness. The album came out in late November, so you can listen to it here, but Decibel has acquired the video for the title track, which you can watch below. The video leans heavily on the song’s ethereal, psychedelic qualities, highlighting music’s ability to take your mind to new places via a young girl.

Classical Music, Instrumental, Christian, Gospel (2,130).

Interesting mix of doom metal, psychedelia, shoegaze and rock, with an epic sensibility. I suppose that it is quite generically inventive - somewhere between stoner rock and occult rock. There is quite interesting use of mellotron/organ, and the singer sometimes sounds a bit like Shirley Bassey. The recording is not too shabby either, if nothing special. At times I felt that the epic vibe might have been tamed a bit by dipping into something more spacey and percussive. In other words, the weakness of the record is plodding rhythms.
