Die-hard fans of this style will surely find some endearing qualities, but on the whole, Mercy offers nothing that hasn't already been heard before. Of note, the band broke up shortly after this release.

1996’s Mercy was the debut album from NC-based progressive metal band Altura, which featured vocalist Hank “Rain” Irving before he joined While Heaven Wept. I’m actually kind of surprised I missed this one when it came out, as I was devouring anything remotely prog metal at the time.Given the Magna Carta label’s repertoire, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Altura took more than a few pages from the Dream Theater playbook. This is very technical stuff, with all the time changes and instrumental excess that goes along with that. Enchant and Ice Age would be good comparison points. Altura gets the technical side of things right, and the vocals (no surprise there) are really good, but there isn’t much spark here. Mercy is lacking that dynamic songwriting and production needed to make it really stand out among the sea of Dream Theater clones that debuted around that time. Whatever made Shadow Gallery, Threshold and Enchant rise above the rest of the pack is absent here.In the end, Mercy is a solid enough album, and one with some impressive musicianship, but it’s not hard to see why Altura never really broke through to that next level. This is worth picking up if you’re a major fan of all things progressive metal or are a big Rain Irving fan. Otherwise you may want to sample a few songs before buying.
