John: 12 Essential Songs. From Iko Iko to Such a Night and beyond, we revisit key tracks by New Orleans’ legendary Night Tripper. By. Alison Fensterstock. Writing for Rolling Stone in 1999, Tom Moon declared I Walk on Guilded Splinters, the closing track from Dr. John’s 1968 album Gris Gris everything you want in voodoo music. Fifty-one years ago, who knew they even wanted voodoo music? Ahmet Ertegun, luckily, who put out the newly -minted doctor’s debut LP on Atlantic’s Atco subsidiary (and several subsequent goofer-dusted albums of psychedelic rootwork, besides - even though, quoted by Mac in his 1994 autobiography Under A Hoodoo Moon, Ertegun hit the roof when he heard it, shouting, How can we market this boogaloo crap? )

For the Dr John song, see In the Right Place. Such a Night" is a popular song from 1953, written by Lincoln Chase and first recorded by The Drifters. The Drifters, featuring Clyde McPhatter, recorded the song in November 1953, and Atlantic Records released it in January 1954 as the intended B-side of the McPhatter-penned "Lucille", which was recorded by an early version of the group  . Elvis Presley also recorded the song and released it on his 1960 album Elvis Is Back Other versions. Dinah Washington recorded the song twice. The first version was recorded for Mercury Records (catalog No. 70336) on March 1, 1954

Technician – John Araya. Perfect Night: Live in London is an acoustic live album recorded during the Meltdown '97 festival. It Includes a version of the Velvet Underground's "I'll Be Your Mirror", originally sung by Nico. Rhino Record Store Day 2017: 2-LP set on 180-gram vinyl.

This is the story of Dr. John’s Gris-Gris. Since the mid 1950s Mac Rebennack built a steady career of live and studio music gigs in New Orleans. The city was ripe with night clubs and other joints where a wide variety of music styles old and new where intermixed. Rebennack was mainly a guitar player then, honing his skills in numerous gigs and recording dates. He started playing the instrument as a child, figuring out strumming patterns from records. Steve Mann, an excellent guitar player who played with many San Francisco 1960s artists such as Janis Joplin and Jefferson Airplane, plays guitar and banjo on the record. You can hear that banjo on Jump Sturdy.

John, an immensely talented pianist-singer from the unique New Orleans music scene that emerged prominently in the 1960s and ’70s, died on June 6 of heart failure. His career spanned nearly 60 years and underwent many different musical phases. The stage persona of Dr. John was intended to embody the history and sounds of New Orleans’ musical heritage, inflected with some of the emerging psychedelic rock production of the late 1960s. In 1972, he put out an album of classic New Orleans cover songs, including Professor Longhair’s Tipitina, James Crawford’s Iko Iko and the traditional Stack-A-Lee. The songs featured more prominently his singing and supremely soulful piano playing, as well as his ability to make a song really swing.

After a couple of solo numbers to open up this live album, things really get moving as Diz & The Doormen enters the stage and backs the good Doctor for the rest of the set. Too bad it is limited to one LP. The quality of this performance leaves me wanting more as Such a Night ends. At only eight tracks it comes across as a bit short.
