Water Babies is a compilation album by American jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. It compiled music Davis recorded in studio sessions with his quintet in 1967 and 1968, including outtakes from his 1968 album Nefertiti and recordings that foreshadowed his direction on In a Silent Way (1969), while covering styles such as jazz fusion and post-bop. Water Babies was released by Columbia Records in 1976 after Davis had (temporarily) retired.

LP (12" album, 33 rpm). Miles Davis Format: Vinyl. At the time of its release, Miles was not recording and Columbia was wanting material for an album. So what came out of the situation was Water Babies, a collection of tracks recorded in the late 1960's, but kept in the company vault until 1976. Needless to say the release was highly controversial when the it came out. Miles was never an artist to look back on his work, hence the "new" release of "older" material reportedly made him very angry with the people he dealt with at Columbia.

The album cover gives no recording dates, but the constant personnel (Davis, trumpet; Wayne Shorter, tenor sax; Herbie Hancock, piano; Ron Carter, bass; Tony Williams, drums) is that of the 1964-68 Davis quintet. Miles harks back to 1956 in his solo, but Carter and Williams boil and evaporate behind him in more contemporary fashion. The way Shorter’s thoughts unravel, growing denser and more complex yet still referring to the theme, is marvelous. Time has revealed this band to be as daring and fascinating as any in the long Davis career, and Water Babies contains some of its best music. There is simply so much happening here; hear it.
