La bohème by Giacomo Puccini libretto (Italian English).
Based on Henri Murger’s novel Scènes de la vie de bohème, Puccini’s opera about tragic love amid the struggling artists of Paris premiered in Turin in February 1896, when it was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Though the initial reaction was muted, the opera quickly caught on among audiences across Italy and the world and remains a cornerstone of the operatic repertoire. More Giacomo Puccini albums. Unsurprisingly, La Bohème doesn’t end well. Marcello gets together with his old flame Musetta, only then to discover that Mimi is dying. She passes away in Rodolfo’s arms and he is left utterly inconsolable. Romantic opera is never very cheerful; but in the hands of Puccini, it’s always exquisitely beautiful. Recommended Recording Anna Netrebko (soprano) as Mimì; Rolando Villazón (tenor) as Rodolfo; Boaz Daniel (baritone) as Schaunard; Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Chorus; Children’s Choir of the Gartnerplatz State Theatre; Bertrand de Billy (conductor). La bohème is an opera in four acts by Giacomo Puccini. The Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa is based on the Henry Murger novel Scènes de la vie de Bohème. When Puccini was composing the music for La bohème, he learned that a rival composer, Leoncavallo, was working on a similar project. Puccini declared: "Let him compose. The audience will decide. Puccini them wrote with an urgent speed, completing his opera a year before Leoncavallo's now all but forgotten work. La bohème was premiered in Turin on February 1, 1896 at the Teatro Regio.

I own this LA BOHÈME on Melodiya LPs issued some years ago and this Aquarius transfer actually improves the sound, removing some of the LP's edge. If you are more than a casual opera lover this would enhance your operatic collection considerably. Yes, it is sung in Russian, as was the custom in those days. What a pleasure to hear a singer reveling in the act of singing. Actually, everyone in this performance is fully engaged. Samuil Samosud was one of Russia’s most important operatic conductors and he has a deep feel for the Puccini idiom.
