The second album from the Washington Squares starts off with a cover of the Leonard Cohen/Sharon Robinson composition, "Everybody Knows. It is a strong statement by this pioneering folk-rock ensemble, a band that should've charted, a band that other musicians admired. Lauren Agnelli wrote for Creem magazine under the pen name of Trixie A. Balm. Her first major label album was the also-underrated long-player by Nervus Rex. This is a very big change in direction - imagine Peter, Paul & Mary with a more radical slant

The Washington Squares are a neo-beatnik folk revival music group. Modeled after early 1960s groups like The Kingston Trio and Peter, Paul and Mary, the group was named after New York City's Washington Square Park, emblematic of Greenwich Village. The group, consisting of Bruce Jay Paskow, Tom Goodkind, and Lauren Agnelli, came up with their name over free drinks provided by Agnelli, who was a waitress at a Mickey Ruskin's Chinese Chance off Washington Square Park where Goodkind and Paskow were regulars.

Their second album, Fair and Square, produced by Steve Soles, followed in 1989. Their albums reportedly sold in excess of 150,000 copies each. The Washington Squares toured extensively in the late '80s and early '90s. But Gold Castle shuttered and Paskow fell ill. His death caused the demise of the group. I never felt the passion to do the band without him," says Goodkind. Appropriately, the Washington Squares played their final show in Greenwich Village, at Bottom Line on July 28, 1994. Goodkind retired from the music business.
