The Smashing Pumpkins didn't shy away from making the follow-up to the grand, intricate Siamese Dream. With Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the band turns in one of the most ambitious and indulgent albums in rock history. Lasting over two hours and featuring 28 songs, the album is certainly a challenging listen. Although the artistic scope of the album is immense, the Smashing Pumpkins flourish in such an overblown setting  . Some of the songs don't work as well as others, but Mellon Collie never seems to drag. Occasionally they fall flat on their face, but over the entire album, the Smashing Pumpkins prove that they are one of the more creative and consistent bands of the '90s.

Produced by Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan with Flood and Alan Moulder, the twenty-eight-track album was released as a two-disc CD and triple LP. The album features a wide array of styles, as well as greater musical input from bassist D'arcy Wretzky and second guitarist James Iha. Led by the single Bullet with Butterfly Wings, the record debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, the first and only such occurrence for the group

Billy responded that the song was called ‘Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness’. This version is in a different key and has a wildly different, full-band arrangement. The theme makes a reprisal twice on the album – as a tag at the end of Thru the Eyes of Ruby in a different key (known as the ‘Nighttime Version’) and in an inverted form at the end of the album’s last track Farewell and Goodnight. Where did the name of the album (and this song) come from? This ever-curious name came about years before its necessity, hatched as it were as I walked about the rusted grounds of Coney Island; on what was a bracing spring day circa 1991. Once received and noted within I auto -hypnotically blurted the title out into the air, hoping that by sharing it I’d better.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ sophomore release, Siamese Dream, brokered the Chicago rockers’ commercial breakthrough, but also showed they’d moved well beyond the limitations imposed by grunge. However, while Siamese Dream was undeniably a pivotal record, it merely hinted at what the band would go on to achieve with their epic third album, Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Simply put, Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness was Billy Corgan and company’s magnum opus. Even with al. ock at its mid-90s height, Corgan understood that Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness needed widespread airplay to impact globally, so he ensured the album also included some of his band’s tastiest singles.

The Smashing Pumpkins would use violins and cellos for some of their songs and Tonight, Tonight would be one of their most famous for using this style. Bullet with Butterfly Wings". Sample of "Bullet with Butterfly Wings", the first single from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) and winner of the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. Sample of "1979", the second single from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995).

Smashing Pumpkins took it upon themselves to make a record that only teenagers could love and for many it was the only one they needed. This mega-deluxe box set pads the original with an additional 64 tracks. Still, their reputation was played for laughs. But Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness turned out to be one of the most generous records of the decade. During a time when rock heroes were hard to come by, Smashing Pumpkins took it upon themselves to make a record that only teenagers could love and for many it was the only one they needed.

Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (Remastered). You can see planets and the moon. The front cover and other art from the album really sums up what I mean. Take the first song "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. A gorgeous piano song that perfectly opens the album. I find this song to be complimentary to the next song "Tonight, Tonight.
