Considered one of the greatest singers in jazz history, Sarah Vaughan was famous for the extraordinarily broad range and dexterity of her voice which produced numerous hits like That Lucky Old Sun, I'm Crazy To Love You, I Cried For You and Send In The Clowns and earned her the nickname "the divine one".
The instrumentalists comprised Billy Taylor Sr. bass, clarinet Tony Scott, drums . Heard, guitars Freddie Green and Mundell Lowe, piano Jimmy Jones, on tenor saxophone Budd Johnson, trombone Bennie Green, and trumpet Miles Davis. The 8 songs were later incorporated into 1955's Sarah Vaughan in Hi-Fi. Barry Ulanov - A Handbook of Jazz 1957 p 80 10" Columbia CL 6133. Still Sarah's most considerable achievement on records, singing such tunes as "East of the Sun" and "Come Rain or Come Shine" with such musicians of distinction as Budd Johnson, Jimmy Jones, and Bennie Green.
Ironically though, neither Brown nor Quinichette or Mann appear on the album's highlight, "Embraceable You," which Vaughan performs with close accompaniment from the rhythm section: Jimmy Jones on piano, Joe Benjamin on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. Vaughan rounds the notes with a smile and even when she's steeping to reach a few low notes, she never loses the tremendous feeling conveyed by her voice. In whichever incarnation it's reissued, Sarah Vaughan is one of the most important jazz-meets-vocal sessions ever recorded.
Sarah Lois Vaughan (March 27, 1924 – April 3, 1990) was an American jazz singer, described by Scott Yanow as having "one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century". She had a contralto vocal range. Nicknamed "Sailor" (for her salty speech), "Sassy" and "The Divine One", Sarah Vaughan was a Grammy Award winner.
