Cold Spring Harbor is the debut studio album by American recording artist Billy Joel, released on November 1, 1971, by Family Productions. Cold Spring Harbor was named after a hamlet of the same name in the Town of Huntington, New York. It is located on Long Island Sound near Joel's hometown. The front cover was photographed at Harbor Road in Cold Spring Harbor.

Joel's debut album, released in November of 1971. Joel recorded this album primarily to showcase his abilities as a songwriter, intending to market his songs to other artists: as a result the production on this album is in the vein of other ft rock acts of the period. Four singles appear to have been released from this album: She's Got A Way, Tomorrow Is Today, Why Judy Why, and Nocturne.

Billy Joel had been looking for his way into the music business. He'd released several obscure albums with The Hassles and Attila before settling down as a singer/songwriter for a small label, which-due to a mastering error-released his debut album at the wrong speed.

Billy Joel's 1971 debut LP became a disaster when it was mastered at the wrong speed, raising the pitch of the singer's voice. By 1971, Billy Joel had endured some rough years. The piano player had been part of a few failed bands – one of which ended, in part, because he stole the drummer’s wife, whom Joel would later wed. He was depressed, tried to commit suicide and checked into a psychiatric hospital.

Notes: "Cold Spring Harbor" is the first solo album by Billy Joel, released on November 1, 1971. He had already released three albums as a member of the bands The Hassles (1966 to 1969) and Attila (1970). 01 She’s Got A Way 02 You Can Make Me Free 03 Everybody Loves You Now 04 Why Judy Why 05 Falling Of The Rain 06 Turn Around 07 You Look So Good To Me 08 Tomorrow Is Today 09 Nocturne 10 Got To Begin Again. Previously Joel had recorded for the United Artists label (two albums with The Hassles ) and Epic (one album with Attila ). Joel recorded the album Cold Spring Harbor for the Family Productions label, but, though the album was musically good, and the beginning of the musical style that made Joel famous, the actual LP horrified Joel.
