Complete your Beethoven, George Szell, The Cleveland Orchestra collection. Symphony No. 9 In D Minor, Op. 125, "Choral" (Beginning). I - Allegro, Ma Non Troppo, Un Poco Maestoso, D Minor, 2/4. 15:29.

George Szell brings classical lightness and drive to Beethoven's early symphony, all the while pointing up the composer's daring formal and harmonic inventiveness. In the first-movement introduction Szell achieves e-style clarity yet maintains a welcome solidity of orchestral tone (without becoming weighty) before springing zestfully into the allegro proper. Only the finale, although done with much finesse and polish, sounds a bit restrained compared to the quicksilver renditions of Harnoncourt and Gardiner  . Personnel: Cleveland Orchestra George Szell, conductor. Digitally remastered.

Clear, strong, and direct with virtuosic ensemble and conducting, George Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra's set of the Beethoven symphonies was one of the great cycles of the '60s. Szell's interpretations are thoroughly thought through from opening gesture to final apotheosis, but still passionately and powerfully played by the superb Cleveland Orchestra. Their First is poised and elegant. Their Eighth is fabulously well-played but a bit too straight-laced. Their Ninth goes from despair to joy and right up to the starry firmament where a loving father must surely dwell. And Sony's magnificent remastering of the original Columbia's hard and impervious sound is revelatory.

The Cleveland Orchestra was one of the first to find new audiences via digital recording technology thanks to its collaboration with the locally-based audiophile label Telarc. This association, as well as one with Decca, began under Maazel and continued under his successor Christoph von Dohnányi. The orchestra's cycle of the complete Beethoven symphonies with Dohnányi was one of the first digitally recorded cycles by a major orchestra. In 2007 the orchestra recorded Beethoven's Ninth Symphony under Franz Welser-Möst for Deutsche Grammophon. Pianist Mitsuko Uchida has begun a series of Mozart piano concertos with the orchestra for the Decca label. The Cleveland Orchestra has long been known for performing newer music. Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36. Lorin Maazel.
