Sad Wings of Destiny is the second studio album by the English heavy metal group Judas Priest, released in 1976. It is considered the album on which Judas Priest consolidated their sound and image, and songs from it such as "Victim of Changes" and "The Ripper" have since become live standards. It is the only album to feature drummer Alan Moore.

Perhaps none was quite as important as Judas Priest's sophomore effort, Sad Wings of Destiny, which simultaneously took heavy metal to new depths of darkness and new heights of technical precision. Building on the hard prog of bands like Queen and Wishbone Ash, plus the twin-guitar innovations of the latter and Thin Lizzy, Sad Wings fused these new influences with the gothic doom of Black Sabbath, the classical precision of Deep Purple, and the tight riffery of the more compact Led Zeppelin tunes

Sad Wings of Destiny’s Judas Priest was: - Robert Halford ~ Vocals - . Downing ~ Lead Guitar - Glenn Tipton ~ Lead Guitar, Piano - Ian Hill ~ Bass Guitar - Alan Moore ~ Drums. First of all, the tracks earlier omitted by Bain are a blessing for the album, and are all highlights. They might have spiced up Rocka Rolla, but they’re doing even better here, and combine nicely with the style that is heard here. Sad Wings of Destiny is darker and sometimes slightly creepy, yet it’s also serene in parts.

In 1976, Judas Priest released their breakthrough album Sad Wings Of Destiny. Metal Hammer tells the story behind the record. Judas Priest are the fathers of modern metal. While Sabbath virtually created the genre and Iron Maiden, Metallica, Slayer and Pantera finessed and developed the style, it was Priest who gave it a shape and focus in the mid-70s. Theirs was the music springboard from which others would catapult into legend.

Lucifer, the one in charge of adoration in heaven, is represented here graphically in his archangel form?
LadyShlak

I have around 25 copies of this album on different labels, most in n/m condition and including rarities like the green Koch version. My question, are there enough fans out there nuts about this album enough to buy the job lot off me or am I just dreamer decieving?

Is the running order for this LP intentional or was it a mistake? The track "prelude" appears on Side B yet naturally should open the album. The LP sleeve has the side B tracks listed first. Never seen anyone comment on this.
WUNDERKIND
Seems like nearly all versions (including the Ovation copy I have) have this reversed running order up until the very recent reissues. Occasionally see songs listed out of order on a sleeve, but never completely reversed like this....

Top drawer. Gull pressings are always excellent, Decca had it covered.

Sad Wings of Destiny is the second album by the English heavy metal group Judas Priest, released in 1976. It is considered the album on which Judas Priest consolidated their sound and image, and songs from it such as "Victim of Changes" and "The Ripper" have since become live standards. It is the only album to feature drummer Alan Moore.Noted for its riff-driven heavy metal sound and the wide range of Rob Halford's vocals, the album displays a wide variety of styles, moods, and textures, inspired by an array of groups such as Queen, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath. The centrepiece "Victim of Changes" is an eight-minute track featuring heavy riffing trading off with high-pitched vocals, extended guitar leads, and a slow, moody breakdown toward the end. "Tyrant" and "The Ripper" are short, dense, high-powered rockers with many parts and changes. Riffs and solos dominate "Genocide", "Island of Domination", and "Deceiver", and the band finds more laid-back moments in the crooning piano-backed "Epitaph" and the moody "Dreamer Deceiver".Sad Wings of Destiny had a positive reception but weak sales as it was released just as punk rock was dominating the spotlight in the UK. The band recorded their first two albums with the independent Gull label under tight budgets; after living off a single meal per day while working side jobs to support themselves, the group grew frustrated with the financial situation and signed with CBS Records for their next album, Sin After Sin (1977). Breaking their contract resulted in the rights to Sad Wings of Destiny and its demo recordings falling into Gull's hands.

I just got the ‎Spain 1976 gatefold edition (‎(LP, Album, Gat) Gull LP-0088 Spain 1976) in almost mint condition, it is beautiful! The sleeve colors are deep and the cardboard is thick and with a satin sense that, sadly, is not featured in the inside section of the fold. The sound is great, not as good as the Back On Black re-edition from 2010 but, hey, this is a 1976 press from Spain. The in-Spanish inside notes are funny to read as they say things like "...the current line-up has been together for only 18 months...", so you have to know that was written in mid 1976 in order to situate the moment in history when that happened. Great collectable item, worth every penny I paid for it. Highly Recommended.
