Robert Preston and Mary Martin. For producer David Merrick, who initially presented the play on Broadway, I Do! I Do! was an ideal investment in that it had neither expensive sets and costumes nor a large cast. Mary Martin and Robert Preston comprised the original cast. with that mellow sound that comes from her throat like red wine at room temperature. Preston is "at his untouchable best when the show asks him to be pompous, and blissfully obtuse.

Now a star of the first magnitude, Preston alternated between stage and film, winning another Tony for "I Do, I Do" and appearing to enormous good effect in such films as The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960), All the Way Home (1963) and Junior Bonner (1972). He received an Oscar nomination for his triumphant portrayal of a witty, gay entertainer in Victor Victoria (1982).
Robert Preston won his Tony as Harold Hill in The Music Man in 1958 and recreated his performance for the film version, making it virtually impossible for anyone to completely accept another actor in the role without comparing their performance to Preston. Preston also won a Tony in 1967 playing opposite Mary Martin in I Do! I Do! Bernadette Peters and Patti LuPone. Robert Preston (June 8, 1918 – March 21, 1987) was an American stage and film actor. Preston was born Robert Preston Meservey in Newton, Massachusetts, the son of Ruth L. (née Rea) and Frank Wesley Meservey, a garment worker and billing clerk for American Express. After attending Abraham Lincoln High School in Los Angeles, California, he studied acting at the Pasadena Community Playhouse. I Do!" with Mary Martin, for which he won his second Tony Award and in 1974, he starred alongside Bernadette Peters in Jerry Herman's Broadway musical "Mack and Mabel" as Mack Sennett, the famous silent film director. That same year (1974) the film version of Mame, another famed Jerry Herman musical, was released with Preston starring, alongside Lucille Ball, in the role of Beauregard Burnside.
I Do! - talked to them like they were his peers, looked interested in everything they had to say and picked several of the youngsters up and gave them a hug. The difference between the way Preston reacted to his fans and the way Mary Martin did was very perceptable. Unfortunately, I only saw Robert Preston in one show: BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS. It was not a success but because of Preston's tremendous stage presence, the show appeared to be wonderful. His co-star was the Swedish actress Ullah Sallert, mentioned above.
