A video introduction to Belfast singer-songwriter Andy White's How Things Are album.
Like any self-respecting singer-songwriter, when White’s 15 year marriage ended, he made an album about it. Indeed, with the possible exception of (Who Said. Thus you also get Separation Street where he’s avoiding places we could meet, the brief hope things might be ok when we talked on the phone in the jaunty You Got Me At Hello with its wailing harmonica and All It Does Is Rain, a number for all the men who didn’t see it coming.
His new album How Things Are is the eleventh studio release in a near 30 year career, and is a very personal collection of songs written after his marriage broke up. With his son Sebastian on drums and Domini Forster as a one-woman string section, White took to the studio to work things through and the result is an intimate album full of feeling. The album’s theme is clear from the start. Driftin’ is an upbeat song with a dark edge that explores a long career of making music and touring and the resulting effects on family life. Andy White has covered a great deal of ground in his career and this most personal of albums demonstrates his fine songwriting very well. The best writers create from their own experiences and White has taken his heartbreak as inspiration, as well as hopefully achieving some form of catharsis in the process. How Things Are is an excellent album full of deep feelings and passionate songs.
Andy White (born 28 May 1962) is a Northern Irish singer/songwriter, poet and author, born in Belfast. He started writing poetry and music early, penning a poem called "Riots" aged nine. He attended Methodist College Belfast. He studied English Literature at Robinson College, Cambridge University, graduating in 1984. He released his first EP Religious Persuasion in 1985 on Stiff Records, and debut album Rave on Andy White in 1986.
White’s never been the world’s greatest singer, but the engaging quality of the material more than compensates on an 11th studio album packed with smart, melodic vignettes of grown-up joy and pain. There was White’s flurry of major record label activity in the late 1980s and early ’90s, his emigration to Australia and – as this warmly confessional and intimate album attests – the break-up of his 15-year marriage. White’s lyrics have always been engaging. While some songwriters tend to veer towards unsavoury self-examination, he seems to prefer a more objective (but no less honest) investigation of pitifully broken hearts.
