Larry Caton, native of Rochester, New York
has had an extensive and varied musical back-
ground. Playing some of the leading clubs, his
own TV and radio shows, he continues to be one
of the most popular organ artist in the Tri-State
area. Ever since the time he played his first en-
gagement at the Hall of Springs, he has been over-
whelmed with both it’s beauty and acoustic re-
ception. 'It has always been his desire to someday
record his Music From The Hall of Springs; thus
is Larry Caton’s debut on Herald Records.

About the Hall of Springs: Located in Saratoga,
New York, it is known throughout the world and
is considered as one of the most beautiful build-
ings in America. Famous for it’s three naturally
carbonated waters it attracts visitors from all parts
of the world. The Hall’s ceiling is 38 feet above
the floor; and from it hangs three tremendous
silver and crystal chandeliers that were made in
Czechoslovakia. The interior construction consists
of varied marble from Italy, Belgium, Crystallin
pink marble from Georgia, Vermont, Kasota stone
from Minnesota and limestone from Indiana. The
woodwork is cherry, which is used in the solid
work, such as floor outlines and panels. Of in-
teresting note is the efforts taken in the matter
of the hall’s accoustic facilities. Acoustical plaster
was specified to absorb not less than thirty percent
of the sound that strikes it, for sound having a
pitch as C-4 corresponding to a frequency of 512
vibrations per second. Special acoustical treatment
was given to the octagonal plaster coffers in the
ceiling designed to have a sound absorption co-
eflicient of not less than 80% with a frequency
from 512 D.V.S. per second to 1024 D.V.S.

The equipment used for this recording con-
sisted of an Ampex 400A recorder and an Altec
639B microphone. Recordings made on Scotch
l l lA-professional recording tape at a speed of 15
inches per second. Every effort was made to en-
hance the unique acoustical conditions of the hall
in which the recordings were produced, by the
careful placement of microphones and organ for
maximum effect. The master tape was carefully
edited, and the LP master processed so as to pre-
serve the dynamics and outstanding reverberant
quality of the original performance.

*The master of this recording was cut with
R.I.I.A. characteristic. Frequency range is from
30 to 15,000 cycles per second. Playback equip-
ment should be set to compensate for this. This
high fidelity recording has been pressed with
100% pure vinyl to insure maximum sound

Among his more notable projects as a session guitarist were Joni Mitchell's critically acclaimed Court and Spark and Hejira albums, Steely Dan's The Royal Scam album, and Donald Fagen's Nightfly album. For much of the 1970s, Carlton was active as a session guitarist, recording on up to 500 albums a year. While working on his next album for MCA, On Solid Ground, Carlton was the victim of random gun violence, and was shot in the throat by gun-wielding juveniles outside Room 335, his private studio near Burbank, California.

Like so many other Los Angeles studio musicians, guitarist and composer Larry Carlton was faced with a choice a number of years back: whether to go solo and develop a name for himself under his own name or to continue the less risky, more lucrative existence as a session guitarist, making good money and recording with prominent musicians. Fortunately for fans of this eclectic guitarist, he chose the former, and has recorded under his own name for Warner Bros.

Larry Eugene Carlton (born March 2, 1948) is an American guitarist who built his career as a studio musician in the 1970s and '80s for acts such as Steely Dan and Joni Mitchell. He has participated in thousands of recording sessions, recorded on hundreds of albums in many genres, for television and movies, and on more than 100 gold records. He has been a member of the jazz fusion group The Crusaders and smooth jazz band Fourplay and has maintained a long solo career.
