Produced for release by Ahmet Zappa & Joe Travers Bonus concert performances mixed and mastered by Craig Parker Adams, Winslow Ct. In 1976 we played for a cozy group of 27,500 deranged fanatics in New York City (13,500 for three shows at the Felt Forum at Halloween, and 14,000 for four shows at The Palladium the week between Christmas and New Year’s). New York last Christmas is what made this album possible.

The album contained live performances recorded in the Palladium in New York in December 1976 and boasts ‘freewheeling’ lyrical content with songs like ‘Titties & Beer,’ and ‘The Illinois Enema Bandit’. Even songs with no lyrical content are provocatively titled (see ‘I Promise Not To Come In Your Mouth’)

Frank Zappa's celebrated December 1976 concerts at New York's Palladium are getting boxed up for a new 40th-anniversary set. The four shows – held the week between Christmas and New Year's – were later whittled down for 1978's Zappa in New York double album.

Features the main album in it's original mix remastered by Bob Ludwig along with relevant Vault nuggets and over 3 hours of newly mixed unreleased performances from the 1976 holiday concerts. PLUS a 60-page book with never before seen photos by Gail Zappa and a replica ticket.

Very great and faithful (re-) master of the original recordings without those ugly reverbs as on all former official "Zappa In New York" CDs. Unfortunately, there are no relating track- or release details given for the recording dates of these legendary shows dated back in Dec.1976.

Joe Travers details on song selection and mastering here from 20:20: https://www.buzzsprout.com/268746/1019952-zappacast-episode-40-zappa-in-new-york-deluxe-the-hologram-tour-and-more-with-joe-travers - the vast effort for doing all this surely justifies the price

Actually that's the master tapes... He wouldn't cut up the multi track tapes although he did that which normally you don't do ... Actually the original multi track of many of the remixes that were on the 1977 album are in the box set. Sometimes it's hard to tell cause he used to add instruments to enhance the songs. Plus listening to the box on headphones the original mix just doesn't sound as good now as the remixes do the reason is remixes from the multi tracks will always sound more transparent than 2 track 15 ips analog tape. On vinyl is a different story.

As per zappa.com the bonus material is kinda 'best of' selection from each track played during the 4 shows: "the additional discs are loaded with relevant Vault nuggets and more than three hours of unreleased live performances from the NYC Palladium concerts, representing every composition played during the concerts and the best alternate performances of every tune Zappa picked for the original album"
thrust
As I understand it Frank cut up all the master tapes to put together the original album. There was no unedited source tape to release the entire 4 show run like the Roxy box.

No I'm sure every tape is there... It was just Ahmet's decision to not go out on this one... I don't know why.. These 4 shows were the best shows he ever played... They focused on the original mixes which included Punky's Meadows and Cruising for Burgers. And then added remixes of the original versions that were on the album. And then added all the tracks that were played at all the shows not from the album to make it a complete show that is cutting corners ... They were all taped.... Joe Travers KNOWS this was the wrong decision but had to go along with his new ahem boss......Ahmet sucks period I'm shocked he has anything to do with Frank's legacy him and Dweezil have crushed it Get some ucking real people to take over Zappa's organization because this is just the worst dream imaginable if this was even thought about in 1985 there would be laughs everywhere especially when he got older and was in the band Z did you ever think he was going to run Frank Zappa ... Never . If Gail were alive those 4 shows would of been mixed she knew how important they were it wouldn't of been released like this in a way her death was a HUGE loss do you think she would have Frank as a hologram and put that on tour NEVER.. Zappa fans would of been in heaven to hear all the shows completed from show 1 to show 4 every live played version is significant ... They could of done it.... But probably will never happen... And the bootlegs of those shows that circulate are terrible. This was tragic... Yeah it sounds great what is on the 5 discs. But do it right. Not like this.
Gold as Heart
Agree, complete 4 Shows should've been target, also on a fancy USB - release policy not consistent here. Regarding content, maybe it's just the vault material that survived ... nonetheless, these are 96K 24bit digital transfers and it just sounds great.
I_LOVE_228
Honestly I don't know why the 4 shows weren't just remixed and released like Halloween 77 in Hi Res on a USB Candy Bar Stick. I'm glad they added 4 more discs with unreleased material. But really this is a hodge podge mess regarding this 1977 mix and adding extras.... It could of been a simple 4 shows remixed done no reverb end of story... Roxy box was perfect Halloween 77 was perfect... This one should of been the same. But it would have to be on a USB stick or most likely a 10 CD set how much would they have charged for 10 CD's ?
