There might not be any jazz right away here as THE MODERN DEEP LEFT QUARTET, Cobblestone Jazz's second album, kicks off with the solid tech-house of "Chance Dub," but the jazz chords come into full-attention with "Sun Child. Mr. Polite" is all about the groove, while "Cromagnon Man" goes for funk-house. Fiesta," despite its name, is relatively sedate house with a strong bass, but "Children" ups the BPMs whilst going more spare in its approach
Either way, "Modern Deep Left Quartet" about sums it up: Cobblestone explores the terrain of deep house through the eyes of a jazz improv group. Curiously, the addition of another member to the mix has resulted in a more pared-down sound than before. The quartet here operate with a sense of intuitive restraint, breezy and sleek, more minimal and hypnotic.
