This is an audio and video discography of Tristan und Isolde, an opera by Richard Wagner which was first performed on 10 June 1865 in Munich. Tristan und Isolde has a long recorded history. In the years before World War II, Kirsten Flagstad and Lauritz Melchior were considered to be the prime interpreters of the lead roles, and mono recordings exist of this pair in a number of live performances led by conductors such as Thomas Beecham, Fritz Reiner, Artur Bodanzky and Erich Leinsdorf.

Wagner: Tristan und Isolde, WWV 90, Act 3 - Isoldes Liebestod by Berliner Philharmoniker and Victor de Sabata. DG has assembled historical Wagner orchestral excerpts which are breathtakingly beautiful and extremely well performed. Of course at my advanced age I'd reasonably ask if anything recorded in 1962 or even 1951 can truly be called historical, however I smilingly admit 1939 and 1927 or 1928 fall within that category!) Briefly the choice of conductors (Furtwängler, de Sabata, Knappertsbusch, Elmendorff, and Jochum) is excellent, and a listener who is prepared to enjoy Wagner excerpts will truly enjoy the excellent and often inspirational selections.
