L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande may not be up to the level of other great continental orchestras, and one does catch slips here and there, but the players' affection for the music and for the conductor is palpable and easily overcomes the occasional technical flaws. Decca's monaural sound may not be as crisp and wide-ranging as current digital recordings, but the engineers certainly knew how to record an orchestra, and the sound is as good as it got in the early '50s.

The Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR) is a Swiss symphony orchestra, based in Geneva at the Victoria Hall. In addition to symphony concerts, the OSR performs as the opera orchestra in productions at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. Ernest Ansermet founded the OSR in 1918, together with Paul Lachenal, with a contingent of 48 players and a season of six months' duration. Besides Swiss musicians, the OSR players initially came from other countries, including Austria, France, Germany and Italy.
Friend of Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky, Ansermet championed their music throughout his long career. His Decca recordings with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande have assumed legendary and benchmark status for much of the French repertoire. His double good fortune was to be at his peak in the mid-1950s at the dawn of stereo recording; and for his record label to be Decca, renowned then as now for unrivaled sound recording quality, underpinned by the famous Decca tree microphone set- up, sensitive engineers and producers, and intelligent choice of recording venues
