Mazzy Star is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Monica, California, in 1989 from remnants of the group Opal. Founding member David Roback's friend Hope Sandoval became the group's vocalist when Kendra Smith left Opal. Mazzy Star is best known for the song "Fade into You" which brought the band some success in the mid-1990s and was the group's biggest mainstream hit, earning extensive exposure on MTV, VH1, and radio airplay.
Keith Mitchell (died May 14, 2017) was a drummer. Father of Paul Mitchell (16). After stints with Monitor and Green on Red, Mitchell joined Opal alongside Roback and singer Kendra Smith. After a pair of EPs and 1987's Happy Nightmare Baby, Smith left the group. Roback then recruited Sandoval to join Opal before the band was reborn in 1989 as Mazzy Star

Smith and Roback formed the group Clay Allison (which released 1984’s Fell from the Sun EP), which later became Opal. In 1987, Opal released its full-length debut, Happy Nightmare Baby, an underrated gem in which Smith’s languid and deadpan vocals played against Roback’s piercing, feedback-drenched guitar; that album’s sound channeled ’60s psychedelic pop with influences as diverse as Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, the Doors, and . ex. However, after a tour, Smith departed from Opal. With Kendra’s Dream, Smith’s surprise appearance on the new Dream Syndicate album provides some sense of closure of sorts for both parties - Wynn called the track the perfect coda to the record, tying up loose ends from the past and then opening them up again to the future. This latest left-of-field return continues Smith’s streak of being unpredictable and furthers cement her cult-like status.
David Roback has been played on NTS shows including Play It As It Lathes w/ Zach Cowie, with Grains Of Sand first played on 2 December 2016.
