Art of the Noise are one of the most groundbreaking, but least understood, bands from the 80's. Their work with ZZT is (rightfully) hailed as groundbreaking, brilliant and highly influential. However, its later albums, without Trevor Horn, are usually either ignored or condemned as hackwork. That album had a similar lack of pop song structure and was almost defiantly composition oriented. In the case of that album, however, the composition was the entire album instead of individual tracks. I can see why the band broke up after the disappointing commercial performance of this album. Art of Noise made four albums of orginal work throughout the '80s and Below The Waste is their fourth. Everything else produced until The Seduction Of Claude Debussey was rework. The personnel in the "group" varied with Anne Dudley and . Jeczalik being the common denominator.

Art of Noise (also The Art of Noise) were an English avant-garde synth-pop group formed in early 1983 by engineer/producer Gary Langan and programmer J. J. Jeczalik, along with arranger Anne Dudley, producer Trevor Horn and music journalist Paul Morley. The group had international Top 20 hits with "Kiss" and the instrumental "Peter Gunn", which won a 1986 Grammy Award.
