Ellen Allien - Remix Collection Today is the third day straight with my CD player cranking Ellen Allien's fresh "Remix Collection". I can't praise the album enough. I also can't help but compare it to the previous - "Berlinette". but I can't say the same about remix collection. This release is much harder and categorical. Broken and clipped beats and sharp surround. it fits strangely enough under an "abstract techno" genre. Yet remix collections are usually to be avoided, since they can lack the cohesiveness that only an artist's album can achieve. Berlin DJ/producer/label owner Ellen Allien breaks through this discrepancy with a collection of her own remixes, and they are so dominated by her particular touch that they easily become part of her own canon, sometimes leaving the originals in the dust. This is particularly true of Miss Kittin and Goldenboy's "Rippin Kittin," which has been tearing down clubs for several years.

Ellen Allien turns her considerable talents towards remixing others on this collection, showing her mastery of any number of styles. From the industrial breaks of Sascha Funke's "Forms and Shapes" to the ghetto funk of Gold Chains' "Let's Get It On." She brings a club sensibility to "Koax," from her erstwhile collaborator, Apparat, while O M R's "The Way We Have Chosen" has an electro-indie feel. She has the opportunity to mix her own "Alles Sehen," and she pumps the sound levels up to full the aural space; for Barbara Morgenstern's "Aus Heiterem Himmel," however, she lets the tones linger to create a more dreamlike state. But the pure techno banging of Gut-Humpe's "Butterfly" shows the Allien can lay on the trance beats as well as anything else. And with Miss Kittin and Goldenboy's eerie "Rippin Kittin," Allien doesn't downplay the paranoid tendencies of the track while making it eminently danceable. Allien as good with others as she is by herself.

the barb. morgenstern and sascha remixes are sincerely heavenly soundscapes, this record is worth it for those two alone. Aus Heiterem himmel is the perfect energy and length for parties that want to dance to techno b/c its hip or cool but get bored after 20 minutes.
