Drawn from Life has the feel of a solid film score, with a tone that wanders between eerie and placid. It's impeccably recorded- pretty at some points and vaguely somber at others- but it never distinguishes itself. The highlight of Drawn from Life is definitely the string arrangements, which have a subtle intricacy that is at times staggering. On some tracks they work as just another element, adding slight color and shading to the surrounding electronics, while on tracks like "Persis" they're used for dramatic effect, with dark ostinatos meant to quicken the pulse. As a whole, Drawn from Life generally blends in well enough to work as solid background music, which brings to mind Eno's thoughts on ambient and how it can be enjoyed with little awareness.

Music for Onmyo-Ji, a previous Eno/Schwalm work from 2000, was released in Japan only. Those who soured at the distant crispness of The Drop will find this to be a more inviting listen, even more so than Eno's 1996 collaboration with bassist Jah Wobble on Spinner

Drawn from Life is a 2001 music album by the British ambient musician Brian Eno and the German composer J. Studio album by. Brian Eno, J. Drawn from Life (2001). January 07003: Bell Studies for the Clock of the Long Now (2003).
J Peter Schwalm is a German percussionist, but there is little percussion (and even that is played by Heiko Himmighoffen) on this gentle, sometimes sterile album. Eno prefers to utilise Schwalm's talents as a co-composer and mixer. The pair bring a serenity to Nell Catchpole's vigorous strings on Persis and subtly leaven Laurie Anderson's booming voice on Like Pictures Part £2, while children's voices bring welcome humanity to Bloom.
