Through the Trees is the third full-length album released by alternative country band The Handsome Family. It was released 1998 by Carrot Top Records (North America), Loose Music (Europe). Through the Trees was nominated by Mojo readers as one of the most important Americana CDs of the 1990s. All music by Brett Sparks; all lyrics by Rennie Sparks, except as noted. Weightless Again" – 3:40. My Sister's Tiny Hands" – 3:27. Where The Birch Trees Lean" – 3:22.

It's doubtful that any previous country album included songs in praise of Cologne Cathedral or Lake Michigan, but backed by the Sparks' austere songs-often just guitar, autoharp, and drum machine-with occasional help by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, the music has an almost Appalachian simplicity and newfound depth of feeling.

and then you play a tune like the soft synth and wistfully sung ‘Tonight I Went Out Walking’ and this even sounds a little bit like TP. In fact I’d go as far to say, as lovely as those vocals are, it’s the atmospheres the instrumental backdrops conjure that define this release. A hypnotic and quietly sinister collection of lullabies? This definitely has a certain gothic quality that sets it apart from the other alt country.

The Handsome Family is an alternative country and Americana duo consisting of husband and wife Brett and Rennie Sparks formed in Chicago, Illinois, and currently based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They are perhaps best known for their song "Far from Any Road" from the album Singing Bones, which was used as the main title theme for the first season of HBO's 2014 crime drama True Detective.

The Handsome Family's debut album, entitled Odessa, was released in January 1995 on the independent label Carrot Top. This first home recording (all of the Handsome Family's albums are recorded in their living room) had slight punk shadings not heard on their subsequent albums. Odessa unfortunately made few waves except for some radio stations' ban on the second song, "Arlene," which is about a woman who gets bludgeoned to death

Album Through the Trees. The Giant of Illinois Lyrics. The giant of Illinois died from a blister on his toe After walking all day through the first winter's snow. Throwing bits of stale bread to the last speckled doves He never even felt his shoe full of blood. Delirious with pain, his bedroom walls began to glow And he felt himself soaring up through falling snow And the sky was a woman's arms The sky was a woman's arms. A boy with a club foot Had sat next to him in school Once upon a summer's day they went wandering through the woods
