Richard Strauss: Elektra. Valery Gergiev is an ideal interpreter for Elektra; he's a master at whipping up an orchestral frenzy and Strauss' often spiky score gives him the opportunity, in this recording taken from live 2010 concerts, to draw a ferocious, virtuosic performance from the London Symphony Orchestra, which plays with abandon and dazzling precision. The standouts in the cast are Felicity Palmer and Matthias Goerne, who are both terrific. Palmer is powerfully convincing and she has all the vocal and theatrical resources to bring Klytämnestra to chilling, haunted life. It's a vivid and truly memorable performance. As Orest, Goerne sings with heroic strength and suppleness and resonance.
Sadly, this recording has a massive drawback in the Elektra of Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet. A pronnounced vibrato across the entire range is the first problem to beset the ear. Coupled with a tendency to fall flat at the top or miss certain key notes altogether, her performance is a bit of a roadcrash. The rest of the cast ranges from superb (Dame Felicity Palmer’s baleful Clytemnestra steals the show) to acceptable (Angela Denoke’s Chrysothemis and Matthias Goerne’s resonant Orestes). Ian Storey brings up the rear with an unremarkable Aegisthius. Worth it for Gergiev? Maybe.

On this new set from LSO Live, Valery Gergiev conducts Strauss' Elektra, one of the most powerful operas in the repertoire, accompanied by a superlative cast. Premiered in 1910 at Covent Garden, under the baton of Sir Thomas Beecham, Elektra is a prime example of Strauss' finest melodic writing. It showcases many, of what were at the time, modernist techniques such as dissonance, chromaticism and fluid tonality. American soprano Jeanne-Michele Charbonnet is recognized as a leading force in German and contemporary music repertoire. She has appeared at the Opera National de Paris, Teatro Real, Deutsche Oper, Teatro La Fenice, and the Teatro Comunale di Firenze . First-class sound and presentation.

The role is certainly not a showcase for vocal subtlety, but Charbonnet's pushing inevitably limits her expressive range. Her voice loosens up as the performance progresses, though, and from the arrival of Orest forward, her portrayal is more persuasive.
