Light Years: The Very Best of Electric Light Orchestra - Студийный альбом от Electric Light Orchestra. В альбом вошло 55 треков.

A Box of Their Best is the first US box set by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), released in 1980. It consisted of the albums A New World Record (with the sides reversed), Out of the Blue and Discovery. Also included was Jeff Lynne's first ever solo single, "Doin' That Crazy Thing". This single, a one-sided single that was marked as a promo, was not in all releases of the box. The box set is almost identical to the UK release Four Light Years, released the same year. All songs written by Jeff Lynne.

Electric Light Orchestra. Lynne was still a member of The Move, alongside Roy Wood and future ELO drummer Bev Bevan, when he wrote what became the very first ELO song, 10538 Overture. With Wood playing a cheap Chinese cello, multi- tracked by Lynne, it sounded to Wood like: a monster heavy metal orchestra. 10538 Overture soon became the new group’s mission statement, the opening fanfare on a debut album described by Melody Maker as a gas.

6) Electric Light Orchestra (Harvest, 1972). Lynne was still a member of The Move, alongside Roy Wood and future ELO drummer Bev Bevan, when he wrote the very first ELO song, 10538 Overture. With Wood playing a cheap Chinese cello, multi-tracked by Lynne, the song sounded to Wood’s ears like a monster heavy metal orchestra. 10538 Overture became the new group’s mission statement, the opening fanfare on a debut album described by Melody Maker as a gas. Face The Music, their fifth album, reached the Top 10 in the US, but in the UK, like the group’s previous two albums, it didn’t even chart. It did, however, produce a UK hit single, albeit belatedly. Evil Woman, a song written in 20 minutes and initially dismissed as filler by Jeff Lynne, gave ELO their first domestic Top 10 hit in three years, and set them up nicely for the next album, A New World Record.

Electric Light Orchestra has always been a band that has been hard to define according to genre. At times they were astonishingly progressive, yet they always seemed to be aiming for the hit singles in the same manner as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. In other words they were a band of substance, originality, integrity that also celebrated the art of the pop song. Electric Light Orchestra released their first album in 1971 entitled Electric Light Orchestra Before Electric Light Orchestra exploded onto the scene with their 1975 Face The Music album, they were enjoying some small success with a series of albums in the early 1970’s. One of the earliest hits the band had was the sentimental grooving ballad Can’t Get It Out Of My Head. The song was released on the 1974 album entitled Eldorado.

ELO's back catalogue is unusual since their compilation albums far outweigh their studio output in number, owing to the large number of hit singles primarily written by Jeff Lynne

The Move’s Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne first conceived their side-project Electric Light Orchestra as a way to pick up where the Beatles left off by bringing classical instruments into their songwriting, but their early experiments lurched lopsidedly between the two. Though the first ELO song, 10538 Overture, perfected the formula from the off, their 1971 debut album let the classical dominate; pop hooks played second fiddle to lengthy baroque evocations of English civil war battles that couldn’t have been more prog if they’d pulled on a fox’s head 24 minutes in and announced supper.
