Notes

Thick card, textured cover. This version has very minor label and back cover differences to A Collection Of Beatles Oldies: there is no KPA logo on the back cover and the Side 2 label specifies Mecolico as the rights society for Bad Boy only.

A8 is listed on the back cover as "Panny Lane", both the spelling and the song being incorrect. The Side 1 label correctly lists it as Yellow Submarine.

The catalog number on the spine is OLE-016

A Collection of Beatles Oldies (subtitled But Goldies!) is a compilation album featuring a selection of songs by The Beatles recorded between 1963 and 1966. The album was released in the United Kingdom and Australia in both mono (catalogue number PMC 7016) and stereo (PCS 7016). It also saw a release in Mexico, Germany, Czechoslovakia and Spain. The release of this album was the result of EMI not having any new material by the Beatles for the 1966 Christmas season in the manner of the previous three years

A Collection of Beatles Oldies (subtitled But Goldies!) is a compilation album by the English rock band the Beatles. Issued in the United Kingdom in December 1966, it features hit singles and other songs released by the group between 1963 and 1966. The compilation served as a stopgap release to satisfy EMI's demand for product during the Christmas period, since the Beatles had only begun the recording for their new studio album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, late the previous month. The album was the band's first official greatest hits collection.

It was Christmas time, 1966. Though hard at work on the beginnings of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, the Beatles had nothing for EMI to put out during the holiday season (aside from the annual Christmas record for the fan club). Revolver had come out in the first week of August, too early to exploit. What to do? So EMI issued this stopgap collection of 16 older recordings for the European market, in effect creating the first "Beatles Greatest Hits" album.

The release of this album was the result of EMI not having any new material by the Beatles for the 1966 Christmas season (as work was still underway for the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band LP), in the same. manner as the previous three years.

A Collection Of Beatles Oldies, Parlophone, PCS 7016, December 10, 1966, stereo. Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. or Ernest . ay & Co. front laminated flipback cover with or without small stereo on the front side. The cover (and text) was approved by the Beatles and an initial very small ‘test’ run was undertaken to make sure everything looked OK. This small test run is characterised by the inverted Fourth Proof text in the top right hand corner of the inner gatefold – just above George Harrison’s head. This is therefore the earliest possible ‘prototype’ (test pressing) cover.
