I must admit I know little about MLEHST even though I have been familiar with their music for some years now. I believe it is manipulated tapes from various source materials, although listening to it you'd be forgiven for assuming it were live electronics. MLEHST seem, on this album (a reissue of one of their earlier tape releases), to be living on the border of the MERZBOW school of noise, yet resist 'Turning Japanese'. Which leaves them with a repressed yet ever-changing cacophony. I guess this is what some people call power electronics - certainly sounds as if the title would suit them. There's a point towards the end of the first track where it could almost be the intro to "Telstar", which kind of indicates that JOE MEEK might have carved "I Was Here" into the insubstantial fabric of this music a long time ago. Whatever the original sounds might have been, by the time we come to hear them, they have been fed through any number of processors (and remain remarkably clean, considering that the equipment used was probably quite Lo-Tech. Feedback, always a possibility in the edgy field of audio effects, if fully indulged in all it's might and glory on the album's title track. Harsher than GODFLESH's similar sonic exploration - "Pure II", but, despite it's simplicity, it still has a grandiose charm. Some tracks remind me of the ambient soundtrack from the second Aliens film - backmasked fades and sudden drop-offs to create an edgy atmosphere. Much more subtle than the other pieces here, they restrain themselves from taaking the sonics to the edge of chaos, and settle instead for quiet - but no less nerve-grating - sounds. Like so many cassette released albums, this clearly deserved release on some more permanent medium. Cacophonous but intriguing music. Originally reviewed for Metamorphic Journeyman.
