Esa-Pekka Salonen (pronunciation : ; born 30 June 1958) is a Finnish orchestral conductor and composer. He is principal conductor and artistic advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, conductor laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and music director-designate of the San Francisco Symphony. Salonen, born in Helsinki, Finland, studied horn and composition at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, as well as conducting with Jorma Panula.

Mimo II for oboe and small orchestra was written in 1992 - a version of a piece for oboe and piano entitled Second Meeting which was completed by the composer earlier that same year. The form resembles that of the familiar theme and variations, but in this piece there are seven themes or melodies, all of which are closely related.
