The Serpent & The Sphere' - Agalloch (71/100). Agalloch is the uncommon result of an uncompromising vision and style. Though they've never let themselves be bound to one sound, their identity is strong and distinctive, even in the wake of recent imitators. With each album, Agalloch seemed to have found the perfect balance between staying true to one's own aesthetic, and shifting the style to the point where each album felt like a new journey. With that in mind, it's not surprising Agalloch have made such waves. The Serpent & the Sphere" is a well produced album featuring a warm, heavy and organic sound, which suits the music well and overall itīs another high quality release by Agalloch.

The Serpent & the Sphere is the fifth and final studio album by American heavy metal band Agalloch. It was released on May 13, 2014 in the . followed by releases on May 16 in Germany and May 19 in Europe. Michael Toland of The Austin Chronicle described the album as "one boot in balmy progressive folk and the other in frigid black metal" with "some of its prettiest, most haunted acoustic textures and heaviest, raspiest roars".

The Serpent & the Sphere rehashes many of the instrumental tricks and flourishes Agalloch delivered on earlier releases, but with less artful avant-garde quirk and embellishment. The majority of the album consists of post-rock style repetitive build-ups ( Birth and Death and the Pillars of Creation, Dark Matter Gods and Plateau of Ages being prime examples) with subtle, barely noticeable changes here and there, culminating in lengthy subtly textured instrumental excursions that leave you unable to quickly distinguish one track from the next. Billy Anderson (Cloud City Studios and Everything Hz) is responsible for the mixing, mastering and production across various projects including Agalloch‘s Faustian Echoes EP, and he handled the recording and mixing here as well.

Agalloch's claim to the throne of modern black metal supremacy is pretty much undisputable. Since 1995, the Portland quartet have been one of the genre's foremost innovators, merging coal-dark riffs and ferociously chugging tempos with a sylvan neo-folk aesthetic for a sound all their own. Following up 2010's critically acclaimed Marrow of the Spirit, the band return with The Serpent & the Sphere, a monolithic slab of heaviness full of ethereal segues into foreboding folk.

The Serpent & The Sphere" не такой "душевный", прочувствованный, как ранние работы. Зато он безмерно увлекателен с точки зрения музыкальной составляющей.

Almost 20 years later, the experimental act is one of underground metal's most respected bands. The album is still held in the highest esteem and is talked about in a near-legendary fashion by metalheads worldwide. Agalloch - Best Metal Songs of 2014 (So Far).
