Lady Sings the Blues is an album by American jazz vocalist Billie Holiday released in December 1956. It was Holiday's last album released on Clef Records; the following year, the label would be absorbed by Verve Records. Lady Sings the Blues was taken from sessions taped during 1954 and 1956. It was released simultaneously with her ghostwritten autobiography of the same name.
Lastly, being able to go back and forth in these takes, we get to witness the sharp juxtaposition of her development as a singer from the raw, early bluesy material influenced deeply by Bessie Smith to the master songstress who could nuance a maximum emotion from just a few notes, smoothly and without a trace of edginess. What Is This Going to Get Us? Arthur Herzog, J. Irene Kitchings.

But Billie Holiday with some of the platinum chipped off the pipes is still way better than a buncha finger-snappin’ wannabes anyday. Her interpretations of the title cut, Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, and Darn That Dream hold you in the palm of her hand with their gentle swing and the band support here is never less than stellar. The Lady sings and swings.

What are the best albums by Billie Holiday? BestEverAlbums. com brings together thousands of 'greatest ever album' charts and calculates an overall ranking. Billie had one of the toughest, saddest, lives I have ever read about and somehow she was able to get through all of the adversity and record timeless songs. I recommend the songs; Strange Fruit, A Fine Romance, God Bless The Child, Summertime, No Regrets, My Man, and When You're Smiling. She has so many more but those songs are a good place to start.
