No Other is the fourth solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Gene Clark. Released in late 1974, it was initially a critical success but a commercial failure; the studio time and cost were seen as excessive and indulgent. The record label, Asylum Records, did not promote the album, and by 1976 had deleted it from their catalog. Clark never recovered from the failure of the album.

Upon its release in 1974, Gene Clark's No Other was soundly reviled as an exercise in studio and financial excess, a critical and commercial failure - it was pop music's Heaven's Gate.

Why did the album Gene Clark's "No Other" fail with such obvious quality on board? At that time - I recall late 1974 and early 1975 moving into bigger and more grandiose musical productions - LPs as event - LPs as concepts - the artwork padded out with two booklets and two posters. Or maybe this kind of tunesmith was ever so slightly corny for the time. I have two other Gene Clark albums, plus the usual Byrds assortment, but somehow this fine album slipped through the cracks of my musical awareness until recently. After a dozen listens, I'm now hooked. These songs are all keepers!

I bought this album in 1974 when I just graduated from college and it gave me goosebumps, my favorite record of the year. It's now 2017, still one of my desert island discs. Pure genius, as good as the best from Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell.
