Q&A: Charlie Watts on His New Jazz Album, Sketching Hotel Beds, and the 40-Year-Old Sex Pistols. The Rolling Stones drummer breaks his usual silence to discuss his passionate side projects. Tell me why you chose songs like I’ve Got a Crush on You and In a Sentimental Mood for the new album. My mother used to sing some of them when I was a kid, hence the title of the album. It’s quite nice setting a singer up like that with the strings. If you’re a drummer, and you sit and the strings just swell like that, it’s a fantastic sound to just swish away to. I enjoy that because I play with guitar players all the time. The quintet’s first three albums were on Continuum, and now you’re recording for the Stones’ label, Virgin
Charles Robert Watts (born 2 June 1941) is an English drummer, best known as a member of the Rolling Stones since 1963. Originally trained as a graphic artist, he started playing drums in London's rhythm and blues clubs, where he met Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, and Keith Richards. In January 1963, he joined their fledgling group, the Rolling Stones, as drummer, while doubling as designer of their record sleeves and tour stages
Charlie Watts has never been a flashy drummer. Unlike John Bonham and Keith Moon, he's never spilled all over his kit in a drunken, dangerous tightrope act on the verge of tumbling down on his band. Instead, Watts has quietly anchored the Rolling Stones for more than five decades, serving as their terrific rhythm section's key component, a solid and understated drummer whose love of jazz informed nearly every one of his professionally played beats . Like in "Beast of Burden" (see No. 6 on our list of the Top 10 Charlie Watts Rolling Stones Songs), the lead single from the Stones' best album starts with a spiked but fluid guitar lick by Keith Richards. But then Watts rolls into the song with a delicacy that never forces his appearance.

The early 60s blues scene was a purists’ movement, but their second album demonstrates how eclectic and boundary-blurring the early Stones were, boldly defining a space of their own somewhere between blues, rock’n’roll and soul, amping up the pace and the attitude of each to thrilling effect. 10. Blue & Lonesome (2016). At the point where even the most committed fan despaired of them ever making an unequivocally great album.
For many Rolling Stones fans, Charlie Watts is the band’s most mysterious and intriguing member. He’s a guy who prefers jazz to rock, yet has spent nearly 60 years playing in the world’s greatest rock & roll band. When the Stones played Glastonbury in 2013, he said, I don’t want to do it. Everyone else does. I don’t like playing outdoors, and I certainly don’t like festivals. A well-dressed eccentric, he is known to draw a sketch of every single hotel room he stays in and owns cars despite being unable to drive
