But for a first-rate conductor with a first-rate orchestra on a full-price label, this 1984 cycle of the Beethoven symphonies by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic on Deutsche Grammophon is arguably the worst ever recorded. That Karajan was a first-rate conductor who made many great recordings is inarguable. That his 1963 cycle of the Beethoven symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic on DG is among the two or three greatest is debatable.

Violin Concerto: David Oistrakh; Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Francaise, André Cluytens conductor. Fantasy: John Lill; Scottish National Orchestra, Sir Alexander Gibson conductor. Christ on the Mount of Olives: Christina Deutekom, Nicolai Gedda, Hans Sotin; Orchestra de la Beethoven Halle de Bonn, Volker Wangenheim conductor. Disc 46-47: Missa solemnis: Heather Harper, Janet Baker, Robert Tear, Hans sotin; New Philharmonia Orchestra and London Philharmonic Orchestra, Carlo Maria Giulini conductor Mass in C Major: Elly Ameling, Janet Baker, Theo Altmeyer, Marius Rintzler; new Philharmonia Chorus and Orchestra, Carlo Maria Giulini conductor. this performance has also been separately released: Beethoven: Missa Solemnis & Mass in C Major).

Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Furtwängler died in 1954, and the direction of an America tour the year thereafter that had already been planned devolved to Karajan. After successful completion of the tour, Karajan was appointed principal conductor in 1956. He preferred to concentrate on the classical-romantic repertoire: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Strauss. In addition, he devoted himself to the Second Viennese School and leading composers of the early 20th century like Ravel, Stravinsky and Debussy, taking occasional excursions into the contemporary era with works by Messiaen and Henze, even Penderecki.
