Jóhann Jóhannsson originally composed Englabörn for a stage play by Hávar Sigurjónsson, yet the music on this 2002 CD is apparently completely detached from it; any discussion of the music's use in the theater is precluded by the absence of dramaturgical liner notes. The Latin text by Catullus, "Odi et amo," establishes conflict from the outset: "I hate and love; why I do, you may ask; I don't know, but I feel it and it tears me apart.
Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson (Icelandic pronunciation: ; 19 September 1969 – 9 February 2018) was an Icelandic composer who wrote music for a wide array of media including theatre, dance, television and films. His work is stylised by its blending of traditional orchestration with contemporary electronic elements. Jóhann released solo albums from 2002 onward. In 2016, he signed with Deutsche Grammophon, through which he released his last solo album, Orphée.
In the six years between And in the Endless Pause There Came the Sound of Bees and Orphée, Jóhann Jóhannsson became a celebrated film composer, earning back-to-back Oscar nominations for his life-affirming score for The Theory of Everything and his ominous, rough-edged music for Sicario. During this time, Jóhannsson continued to work on personal projects including this, his Deustche Grammophon debut.
Jóhann Jóhannsson sadly died in February, shortly after this concert was announced. After consultation with Jóhann’s family, it has been agreed this performance will go ahead in tribute to him. barbican.
