Adam Ant Is the Blueblack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter is the sixth solo studio album by Adam Ant. The album's title was announced by Ant in the NME in April 2010. As per Adam's announcement at his gig in Chatham in September 2012, the new album was released on 21 January 2013 by Ant's own record label Blueblack Hussar Records.

Last time Adam Ant released an album, chart success was possible, even expected, so he indulged in his softer side on 1993's Wonderful. Those were different times. It's hard to tell and ultimately it matters little, because much of the appeal of The BlueBlack Hussar is its mess, how the Adam works feverishly to incorporate any idea he's ever had into one album. He's working with a couple of guitarists - he fell out with old mate Marco Pirroni early on in its composition - relying mainly on Morrissey lieutenant Boz Boorer but also finding room for 3 Colours Red guitarist Chris McCormack, who provides the album's harder, steelier punch.

Adam Ant's first album in 18 years is a double LP that speaks in a variety of voices and styles that the Ant faithful, who recall his punk roots, will surely understand. Once a polished performer who knew that style was as important as substance in the temporary world of pop music, Ant has dropped all pretenses and dared to play it hard and straight and use this album as a confessional of sorts. The vocals are raw. The backing vocals are rawer. Cool Zombie" kicks off as a blues. Stay in the Game" follows with a psychedelic weirdness most associated with Julian Cope.

Pop icon Adam Ant is making his eagerly-awaited comeback with his first album and single in 17 years, a world tour and a film. The release will be supported by new movie, The Blueblack Hussar, produced by The Klaxons bassist Jamie Reynolds. Ant and his latest incarnation, Adam Ant and The Good, the Mad and the Lovely Posse are also taking in a sell-out tour of America, fresh from their successful tour of Australia.

Sadly, I've seen this album touted as "Adam Ant's comeback album" which will mislead people into thinking that it's a properly produced and completed new album. Instead it's a collection of demos and outtakes that seem to be compiled from the last few decades. Think of it as a follow up to the "Redux" collection of demos. How good or bad is it? Well, that depends on your definition of what makes a good or bad album. Anyone, especially casual fans, looking for a well polished album of new Ant material is likely to be disappointed.

What most people know about Adam Ant's troubled 21st century is that he threw a car alternator through a pub window, waved a gun around and got sectioned. What fewer realise is he's been working on a comeback album. He's self-aware enough to acknowledge the situation in swamp-glam lead single "Cool Zombie" (interest declared: I'm in the video), with its references to "not. The Ant album it reminds me of the most, in fact, is Dirk Wears White Sox: there's the same mid-fi production, and the same mix of perversion. There are even Dirk-style tributes: to Ziggy-inspiring rock'n'roller Vince Taylor, and to McLaren ("Who's a Goofy Bunny?") and Westwood ("Vivienne's Tears"). The standouts, though, are neo-1950s ballad "Valentines", the exuberant "Bull " (sic) and the metallic "Hard Men Tough Blokes".

This album has an average beat per minute of 108 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 62/140 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page. Tracklist Adam Ant Is the BlueBlack Hussar in Marrying the Gunner's Daughter. Recent albums by Adam Ant. Wonderful.
