Organist Jimmy Smith is joined by one of two guitar-bass-drums rhythm sections, and mostly sticks to then-current R&B hits here. He does what he can with "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," a brief "Respect," and "Funky Broadway," while contributing his own blues, "T-Bone Steak. The 31-minute set has its moments but no real surprises, but it swings funkily throughout.

Mad respect for Jimmy Smith – a cool small group record that's different than some of his bigger-concept, larger arrangement records for Verve! The groove here is tight and right on the money – and the tracks are a bit longer than other Verve sessions too – as the master really opens up on Hammond, and hits some sweet soulful lines in the company of players who include Thornel Schwartz or Eric Gale on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, and Bernard Purdie or Grady Tate on drums! . LP, Vinyl record album.

When Jimmy Smith moved from Blue Note to Verve in the 1960's the nature of his recordings changed in several ways. One way they changed is that he was often backed by a big band; another way they changed is that he was often asked to record jazz versions of currently popular songs. The music on this CD clearly demonstrates the second of these points. However, regardless of the material, Jimmy Smith was still Jimmy Smith funky, blues-drenched, soulful. If one is old enough to remember these songs as popular music hits, then you may think of this as "Jimmy plays pop". 4 people found this helpful.
